More Than Just a Scroll: What the Media Taught Me This Week

As a college student and athlete, I spend a lot of time on social media, watching sports highlights, scrolling through news updates, and listening to podcasts. I realized that the mass media plays a big role in what I learn outside of the classroom. This week, I paid attention to what I was actually learning from what I watched, read, and listened to—and here are five things that stood out.

1. Mental Health Awareness in Sports Is Growing

I came across a SportsCenter Instagram post about a professional basketball player who took time off to focus on mental health. Seeing how open athletes are becoming about their struggles really stood out to me. A few years ago, that topic was hardly discussed in sports.

Significance: As a college athlete, it made me think about how important it is to take care of my own mental health and check in on teammates. The media is helping change the culture by showing that athletes are human too.

2. The NCAA Is Expanding NIL Opportunities

I read a news article on ESPN about the NCAA’s new name, image, and likeness (NIL) updates that give student-athletes more freedom to profit from personal brands. I wouldn’t have known these specific rule changes without the article.

Significance: This information made me realize how much the college sports landscape is changing. It’s not just about competing anymore—student-athletes now have to think about branding, contracts, and business decisions.

3. College Students Are Facing Higher Living Costs

While scrolling through Twitter (X), I saw a thread discussing the rising cost of rent and food for college students. Several students shared how they work multiple jobs just to stay enrolled.

Significance: It made me more aware of the challenges other students face. As someone who’s fortunate to be on scholarship, it gave me perspective and appreciation for what others are managing outside of academics.

4. The Impact of AI on Academic Integrity

On YouTube, I watched a video discussing how some universities are changing their policies to address AI-generated essays and assignments. Professors are beginning to redesign coursework to encourage more in-person writing and discussion.

Significance: This stood out to me because I’ve seen AI becoming a big part of student life. It made me realize how technology can both help and hurt us if it’s not used responsibly.

5. Recovery Techniques Used by Pro Athletes

I listened to a podcast episode with an NFL strength coach who talked about recovery—things like sleep tracking, cold plunges, and nutrition timing. I didn’t realize how much detail goes into managing an athlete’s body for performance.

Significance: It encouraged me to start taking my own recovery more seriously. I’ve started paying more attention to rest and stretching instead of just focusing on training hard.

Final Reflection

This week made me realize how much the media shapes what I know and how I think. From social issues to sports science, I’m constantly learning from what I consume online. Media isn’t just entertainment—it’s one of the biggest teachers in my daily life. The key is recognizing what’s worth taking in and what’s just noise.
